Overview of the Small Business Ministerial Council

The Small Business Ministerial Council is a peak body facilitating Government interaction with Victoria's small business community.

The Council provides an important means for Government to consult and communicate directly with business operators. It plays an important role in providing feedback for the Government to ensure that its policies and programs support the small businesses sector.

The Small Business Ministerial Council has an advisory function only. While it can consult with key stakeholders in undertaking its tasks, it does not implement specific proposals.
The Council is chaired by Mr David Mann, and reports directly to the Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business.

Terms of Reference

The Small Business Ministerial Council is responsible for advising the Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business on small business policy and program priorities and will:

provide support and encouragement for small business to grow in a dynamic environment;
address the need for small business to compete on fair and equal terms;
strengthen advocacy arrangements for small business and develop its partnership with the Government;
provide a favourable business environment for small business by removing impediments and easing the regulatory burden;
enhance information and business management training opportunities for small business;
promote the role of women and young people in small business; and
raise current and emerging matters or issues faced by small business.

Small Business Victoria, within the Department of Business and Innovation, provides secretariat support to the Small Business Ministerial Council.
